If you’ve ever searched for a massage and found yourself confused by the terminology, you’re not alone. Sports massage and deep tissue massage sound similar, and there’s genuine overlap — but they’re not the same, and knowing the difference helps you choose the right treatment.
Deep tissue massage
Deep tissue is a style of massage that focuses on the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. It typically involves slow, firm strokes designed to break down tension and knots. It’s often offered in spas and general massage clinics.
Sports massage
Sports massage is a broader, more clinical discipline. It incorporates deep tissue techniques, but also draws on a wider range of methods — soft tissue release, neuromuscular techniques, assisted stretching, and more. Crucially, it involves assessment. A sports massage therapist is trained to look at how you move, identify what’s contributing to your problem, and treat it accordingly.
The key differences
So which do you need?
If you have a specific problem — pain, restricted movement, a recurring niggle — sports massage is the better choice. If you just want to relax and release general tension, deep tissue is fine.
That said, a good sports massage therapist will adjust their approach based on what you need on the day. Sometimes the right answer is both.
